Troubleshooting Headphones and Earphones

  1. Make sure your audio source is on and the volume is up.
  2. If your headphones have a volume button or knob, make sure to turn it up.
  3. If you have battery-powered headphones, make sure there is enough charge.
  4. Make sure the headphone jack is firmly plugged into the correct audio jack.

  • If the service not started, double click on audio service select properties, and change startup type automatic.
  • Restart your PC to apply changes and check if headphones working as expected.

It is possible that your audio drivers are not up to date. Often, if you use Realtek drivers, or a Realtek audio chip, not having the right drivers can cause lots of devices to not work.

  1. Open Device manager using devmg.msc.
  2. Expand Sound, Video, and game controllers.
  3. Right-click your sound card/device and select Update Driver.
  4. Install any drivers that are available.
  5. Restart your system.

This may happen when you have the external speakers set to default. Perform the task mentioned below to set headphones as default:

  • Open control panel and then Hardware and sound option.

  • Now check if headphones are listed there and right click on it and choose to enable.
  • Highlight that headphone and click on “Set as Default”.

  2. Go to Hardware and Sound and select Sound.
  3. Double-click your headphones on the Playback tab.

Disable exclusive mode

Headphones that have a mic with them are often set as the default communication device. This might prevent other apps from being able to use it.

  1. Open Control Panel.

  3. Select the Playback tabselect your headphones, and click the Properties button.
  4. In the Properties window, go to the Advanced tab.
  5. Under Exclusive Mode, uncheck both the options that you see.
  6. Disconnect and reconnect the headphones.

Check app settings

Some apps, particularly those that record audio, or that are chat applications, have their own sound settings. Under these settings, an audio device can be selected, and their volume can be set. Check the app’s sound settings, and make sure the correct device i.e., your headphones have been selected, and the volume is not set to zero.
